The New York Academy of Sciences has educational programs that focus on mentorship, skills development, and the application of skills to real world challenges.
Out of School Time: The Academy’s Afterschool STEM Mentoring program recruits inspiring young scientists and engineers to work with underserved elementary and middle school students in New York City and Newark. One of the curriculum options includes workshops for students ages 9-11. Students learn Scratch, HTML, and Python while designing games, building websites and creating animations, as well as applying CS and sensors to automate gardening. Grades: 4-8 (LINK: https://www.nyas.org/programs/global-stem-alliance/afterschool-stem-mentoring/?tab=Curriculum)
During School Time: The Scientist-in-Residence program matches scientists with New York City public school teachers to bring scientific inquiry to life in the classroom. Scientists from all disciplines are welcome to apply. We highly encourage scientists and STEM professionals with expertise in computer science, software engineering, and information technology to apply. Grades: K-12 (LINK: https://www.nyas.org/programs/global-stem-alliance/scientist-in-residence/)
Camps During School Breaks: The Academy offers computer coding camps for students grades 5th through 8th throughout the year. Check our website for updates. Visits from scientists and professionals bring the camp to life for students; please reach out if you would like to become involved in one of our camps.
